Amphora, Vase au lézard, première moitié du XXème 

This vase in form of truncated alabaster is adorned with several vegetal patterns in light relief. A lizard, perched on the lip og the vase, shape the handle. The technique and the iridescent glaze effect give a metallic appearance to the vase. The vegetal decoration seems treated in the “repoussé”. In addition, the  very fine lip is deformed as the  sheet metal starting to melt. The artist skillfully plays with the material to deceive the viewer.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the ceramics’ production is very important in Austria and in northern Bohemia. This area is near the cities of Dresden and Meissen, high places of German porcelain. Several manufactories were born in this region at that time. Among them, Amphora is one the largest. The manufactories were located in the current neighborhood of Trnovany in Czech Republic. It was created in 1892 by three friends: Reissner, Stellmacher and Kessel. Originally called RStK, the factory took the name Amphora after the departure  of Stellmacher in 1905.
