Delphin Massier & Antoine Ambrosio-Donnet, Vallauris, France, Large Majolica Boat Planter, circa 1900

This spectacular majolica boat planter, of a brilliant blue, is surrounded by eight cherubs. It is signed by Delphin Massier. A simpler model is referenced in the commercial catalog of the factory of Clément Massier on page 20, at number 121 “Jardinière Bateau”. Cobalt blue is a color very used by he Massier family and especially to Clément, who was initiated into this color by Gandolfi Gaetano, an Italian native of Bologna, who worked at his father’s studio, Jacques Massier. This boat is also signed “B, Ambrosio” at the base. Antoine, Marius, Blaise Ambrosio was born on June 11, 1887 in Vallauris; he is the son of Blaise Ambrosio, native of Frabosa Sottana (Italy) and modeler in the Massier Manufactory.
