École de Paris, Pair of vases mounted as lamps, circa 1870

This pair of vases mounted in lamps is undoubtedly the work of Thomas-Victor Sergent. An important member of the École des Suiveurs de Palissy in Paris, he draws his inspiration from ancient ceramics to create his own decorative vocabulary. We find here all the characteristics of his work: a beautiful colour with brilliant blues, references to Antiquity and the Renaissance, the mixture of styles… The decor is full of poetry: the birds in the centre, the women-anses or the vaporous landscape effects give a real charm to these pieces.
