Smoking Chair, France, circa 1860

This French smoking chair, also known as a “smoker”, is made of a dark wood structure covered with red velvet. Richly decorated, her feet are decorated with gold and red vegetal motifs. This polychromy stands out widely on dark-coloured wood. The belt is also decorated with a stylized heart motif in gold, red and blue. The backrest consists of an X with a central key and a drawing representing a golden vase filled with pipes with a background of green leaves. This key creates a star pattern by superimposing itself on the bars. These bars have a particular shape that can refer to the shape of pipe cleaners. The backrest uprights include a drawing of an ionic column.
