Jérôme Massier, Butterfly vase, Late 19th Century, polychrome glazed ceramic, Vallauris, France
Jérôme Massier (1850-1926) was a French ceramist from Vallauris, known for his contribution to the development of artistic ceramics at the end of the 19th century. His workshop, La Grande Manufacture, marked the history of ceramics by combining traditional techniques with bold forms and nature-inspired decorations, characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement.
The piece presented here, a butterfly-shaped vase, is one of his creations that perfectly fits into this stylistic tradition. This vase is a zoomorphic ceramic in high relief, sculpted to evoke the shape of a butterfly, and adorned with polychrome glazes, typical of Massier’s work.
