Manufacture de Minton, Large baluster vase with ivy decoration and cat’s head handles, Circa 1855, glazed ceramic, Stoke-on-Trent, England

This rare vase is a perfect example of the originality and technical sophistication achieved by the Minton factory in the second half of the 19th century. Set on a baluster form, its naturalistic ivy-leaf decoration and stunning cat-head handles are an expression of true formal and ornamental freedom. At the Minton factory, this freedom gave rise to a stylistic eclecticism of the most uninhibited kind. The colored glazes perfected by Frenchman Léon Arnoux as early as 1850 enabled the manufactory to magnify shapes and attract the attention of an international clientele.
