Manufacture of Lunéville, Keller & Guérin (signed), Pot with orchids, circa 1905, tin-glazed earthenware, France
This truncated cone-shaped pot with a wavy surface recalls a form inspired by metalwork, like shaped sheet metal. This impression is enhanced by the use of a glaze known as “metallic luster,” which creates golden, silver, and coppery reflections. The circumference is decorated with fields of orchids created in negative during the application of the glaze. The most notable feature of this piece is undoubtedly its iridescent glaze. Metallic luster is a glazing technique whose iridescent effect is achieved thanks to metallic oxides incorporated into the glaze. Light reflects off these suspended metallic particles, creating subtle effects of iridescent colored shine.
