Large rattan armchair with hourglass base and handle, Circa 1860, France
This large rattan armchair bears witness to the unrivalled craftsmanship of the Perret & Vibert factory in the late 19th century. Manufacture Perret & Vibert, also known as “La maison des bambous”, is one of the world’s leading decorators and manufacturers of luxury bamboo and rattan furniture, as well as carved wood with oriental and exotic shapes and decorations. This armchair is unique in that it demonstrates the technical skills of its craftsmen by employing various rattan weaving techniques on the base, back and handles. The wickerwork features rosette friezes and honeycomb motifs, while the base turns into an hourglass shape.
