Jérôme Massier, Blue planter, circa 1900, with gilded butterfly decoration and glazed ceramic, Vallauris, France
Jérôme Massier (1850-1926) was a French ceramist from Vallauris, known for his contribution to the development of artistic ceramics at the end of the 19th century. His workshop, La Grande Manufacture, left a significant mark on the history of ceramics by combining traditional techniques with increasingly industrial production aimed at selling through catalogs across Europe.
This cache-pot is part of that type of production. The speckled blue achieved by the artist demonstrates a high level of mastery over colors and firing techniques. The gilding on the collar and butterfly motifs creates a clean and very modern decoration for its time.
